When I began looking into dA I searched for a "real-world" metaphor to give me a handle on how to conceptualize a digital-social space like dA. I required a metaphor that addressed the unique qualities that distinguish dA from other social media platforms. Through conversations with others I nurtured the idea of dA as a neighborhood in a larger digital metropolis; a neighborhood where, like in many cities, people hangout at informal sites and share expertise.
